100% combed ringspun cotton is the standard for infant daily wear. It is breathable, soft, and washable. Fleece (cotton-poly blend) is appropriate for layering in cooler weather. Avoid polyester-heavy blends for sleep and extended skin contact — cotton breathes better and regulates temperature more effectively.
A practical infant wardrobe for the first three months: 7 to 10 onesies or baby tees, 3 to 5 sweatshirts or fleece layers, 2 to 3 zip-up hoodies for outerwear. Gender neutral colours mean everything pairs with everything and works regardless of the baby's sex if unknown before birth.
Wash all baby clothes in cold water before first use to remove any finishing residue from manufacturing. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low for ongoing care. Pre-shrunk cotton holds its size.
