CVC stands for Chief Value Cotton, an industry term indicating that cotton makes up the largest percentage of the blend by weight. A typical CVC shirt runs around 60% cotton, 32% polyester, and 8% viscose (also called rayon). The blend is designed so the cotton character dominates the hand feel, while the other fibers contribute specific performance properties. It is distinct from a 50/50 poly-cotton blend, where neither fiber dominates.
Viscose is derived from wood pulp cellulose and has a naturally smooth, silky surface structure at the fiber level. Even at 8% of the blend, it has a disproportionate effect on how the fabric feels against skin. It contributes the drape and fluid movement you notice when you hold a CVC shirt up versus a standard cotton-poly. It also helps the fabric lay flat on the body rather than clinging or puckering, which is why CVC is popular for fitted cuts.
The polyester component at around 32% brings two practical advantages: moisture management and dimensional stability. Polyester fibers are hydrophobic, so they pull moisture away from cotton and viscose and push it toward the fabric surface where it can evaporate. This is not the same as dedicated performance moisture-wicking, but it does make CVC noticeably less clammy than 100% cotton in warm conditions. Polyester also resists stretching, so the shirt retains its original shape through repeated washing and wearing.
CVC shirts typically fall in the 140-160 GSM range, which is lighter than most single-jersey cotton tees that run 160-180 GSM. The lighter weight combined with the viscose gives the fabric a noticeable drape, meaning it falls cleanly off the shoulders and chest without the slight stiffness you get from heavier plain cotton. This makes CVC better suited to slim and fitted silhouettes. The fabric also has a subtle heathered look because different fibers dye at slightly different rates, giving finished garments visual depth without being patterned.
CVC is more forgiving than 100% cotton when it comes to shrinkage because the polyester component resists heat-related contraction. Cold wash and low-heat drying will maintain sizing accurately. Viscose can lose strength when wet, so avoid wringing or bunching the shirt when washing. Over time, well-cared-for CVC shirts tend to stay truer to their original size and shape than pure cotton shirts washed the same way.

Polyester fibers are dimensionally stable and resist the progressive stretching that causes 100% cotton shirts to lose their silhouette at the neck and shoulders over months of wear. A CVC shirt washed 50 times will fit closer to its original shape than a comparable cotton shirt.
Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it, which is why a wet cotton shirt feels heavy and clammy. The polyester in CVC is hydrophobic and helps move moisture toward the surface of the fabric. For everyday wear this means less clamminess in warm weather or during moderate activity.
The three fibers in a CVC blend accept dye differently. Cotton absorbs dye most fully, polyester resists it, and viscose sits in between. The result is a subtle heathered or marled appearance even in solid colors, which gives the fabric a more premium look than a flat single-color cotton shirt.
The lighter weight and slight moisture management of CVC makes it usable in warm weather without overheating, while the cotton content provides enough insulation that it does not feel thin in air-conditioned environments.
Because polyester holds dye differently than cotton, garment-dyed CVC has more visual interest and depth than garment-dyed pure cotton. Screen prints and DTG prints also adhere well to the blended surface and tend to last through washing with less cracking than prints on purely synthetic fabrics.
