A sports bra needs to do three things well: provide the right level of support for the activity, manage moisture during workouts, and stay comfortable through the full wear period. Getting one right while sacrificing another is the most common failure in sports bra design. The options in this collection are selected to cover the full range of impact levels and wear contexts.
Impact Level and Support
Low impact (yoga, pilates, walking, light stretching): compression-style bras with a relaxed band work well. These are typically more comfortable for all-day wear. Medium impact (cycling, weight training, dance, aerobics): encapsulation or combination support with a firmer band. High impact (running, HIIT, jumping activities): maximum encapsulation with wider straps and a firm underband to minimise movement. The right support level for your activity is more important than brand or price.
Fabric and Moisture Management
Performance fabrics in sports bras are typically polyester-spandex or nylon-spandex blends. Polyester blends dry quickly and retain moisture-wicking properties through extended washing. Spandex content (typically 15-25%) provides the stretch required for a supportive fit across body shapes and size ranges. Smooth inner seams at the band and cup edges prevent chafing during extended wear, especially relevant for high-impact activities.
Fit and Sizing
Sports bra sizing follows two conventions: standard bra sizing (32B, 34C, etc.) or simplified sizing (XS through XL). Standard sizing gives more precise fit for cup volume; simplified sizing is easier to use but may require more adjustment for different body proportions. For high-impact support, the band should feel firm but not restrictive. The straps should not dig into the shoulder. The back should lie flat. If the band rides up during activity, go down a band size.
Pairing and Wear Contexts
For solo activewear: pair with jogger pants or shorts for a complete gym look. As a layering piece: under a zip-up jacket, open shirt, or lightweight hoodie for transitions between workout and casual contexts. For low-impact daily wear: lighter compression styles work as all-day support under a range of tops. Browse our women's joggers and women's shorts for complete activewear looks.
